Chores for 2 year old

  • Putting away toys

  • Helping with meal prep, such as washing vegetables or stirring ingredients

  • Assisting with laundry, such as sorting clothes by color or fabric type

Chores for 3 year old

Chores for 6 year old

  • Help with meal prep, such as stirring and measuring ingredients

  • Assist with laundry, such as sorting and folding clothes

  • Set the table for meals

  • Wipe down surfaces and sweep floors

  • Help with watering plants and gardening tasks

  • Assist with simple pet care tasks, such as feeding and watering

Chores for 7 year old

All of the above, plus:

  • Put away groceries

  • Help with more complex meal prep tasks, such as cutting vegetables with a plastic knife

  • Assist with organizing household items

  • Help with yard work, such as raking leaves or picking up sticks

  • Begin learning how to do basic repairs, such as tightening screws or hammering in nails

Chores for 8 year old

All of the above, plus:

  • Help with laundry, including using the washing machine and dryer

  • Take out the trash and recycling

  • Assist with more complex pet care tasks, such as grooming

  • Help with cleaning tasks, such as washing windows and wiping down baseboards

  • Begin learning how to do basic household repairs, such as replacing a lightbulb or fixing a loose doorknob

Chores for 9 year old

All of the above, plus:

  • Help with meal planning and grocery shopping

  • Do their own laundry, including sorting and washing clothes

  • Assist with cleaning tasks, such as washing dishes and scrubbing the sink and bathtub

  • Help with yard work, such as mowing the lawn or raking leaves

  • Begin learning how to do more advanced household repairs, such as replacing a faucet or fixing a leaky pipe

Chores for 10 year old

All of the above, plus:

  • Assist with planning and preparing meals for the entire family

  • Do their own laundry and assist with household laundry

  • Help with cleaning tasks, such as scrubbing the toilet and shower

  • Assist with more advanced yard work, such as pruning bushes or trimming trees

  • Begin learning how to do more advanced household repairs, such as replacing a light switch or fixing a leaky roof

Remember to keep tasks age-appropriate and to supervise and assist your child as needed. It is also important to praise your child for their efforts and to be patient as they learn and develop new skills.
